The national anthem of Saint Kitts and Nevis is “O Land of Beauty!” — a hymn of pride, faith and unity adopted in 1983, the year the twin-island federation gained independence. Sung at flag-raisings, school assemblies, sporting events and national celebrations, it captures the deep love Kittitians and Nevisians hold for their homeland and their shared destiny as one nation.
The lyrics: “O Land of Beauty!”
O Land of Beauty!
Our country where peace abounds,
Thy children stand free
On the strength of will and love.
With God in all our struggles,
St. Kitts and Nevis be,
A nation bound together,
With a common destiny.
As stalwarts we stand,
For justice and liberty,
With wisdom and truth,
We will serve and honor thee.
No sword nor spear can conquer,
For God will sure defend,
His blessings shall forever
To posterity extend.

The story behind the anthem
“O Land of Beauty!” was written and composed by Kittitian musician and educator Kenrick Anderson Georges. His entry was chosen from 45 submissions in the national competition held ahead of independence, with the selection committee judging that it would stand the test of time. On the federation’s first Independence Day — 19 September 1983 — the anthem was performed as the music of a sovereign nation for the first time, and Georges was honoured for his contribution to the new state. He remained one of the federation’s most celebrated cultural figures until his passing in 2024, and his anthem endures as his greatest legacy.
What the anthem expresses
From its opening invocation of the islands’ natural beauty, the anthem moves through the themes that define the national story:
- Independence and sovereignty: composed for the birth of the nation, it celebrates a people who “stand free” — the fulfilment of generations of struggle for self-determination.
- Unity: the anthem binds St Kitts and Nevis together as one people — in its words, “a nation bound together, with a common destiny.”
- Faith: its verses acknowledge divine guidance in the nation’s struggles and its future.
- Justice, liberty and truth: values the anthem urges every citizen to serve and uphold.
- Resilience: an enduring spirit shaped by the islands’ history of overcoming slavery and colonialism.
When the anthem is performed
The anthem is performed at official state occasions, daily in many schools, at the National Heroes Day and Independence Day ceremonies each September, and wherever the federation is represented abroad — from regional cricket to the Olympic stage. Citizens stand at attention when it is played, often facing the national flag.
